The Correct Way To Wear Your Wedding Ring
One of the first things that comes in the planning and preparation for a wedding is the purchasing of an engagement ring for the bride. And one of the questions many brides have for after the ceremony is how to wear their wedding ring and engagement ring. Is the wedding ring worn with the engagement ring on top? Is the wedding ring worn on top? Does the engagement ring even need to be worn at all? Unfortunately, there isn’t a hard and fast answer to this question.
Many say that, traditionally, the engagement ring is worn on top of the wedding band. Part of this tradition may come from brides wearing their engagement rings on their right hands (or not at all) during the wedding ceremony, then putting it on over the wedding band for pictures and the reception.
The Greek believed a vein in the ring finger of the left hand led directly to the heart, which is why wedding rings are worn on that finger. So, for many, wearing the wedding band under the engagement ring puts the wedding band “closest to the heart,” and the engagement ring worn on top of it “protects” it.
Others will tell you that you should do whatever is most comfortable for you. You may find that your ring set fits better if the engagement ring is closest to your heart. You may choose to wear your engagement ring on your right hand, or you may choose to keep your engagement ring in your jewelry box, and only wear it for special occasions.
Some people say that wearing the wedding ring on top of the engagement ring shows the story from engagement to marriage, and that it represents the culmination of the wedding in the marriage.
To further complicate the issue, some cultures wear wedding bands on the right hand, and some religions don’t emphasize a ring in their wedding ceremonies at all.
Ultimately, how you wear your wedding and/or engagement rings is up to you. A ring is a symbol of the love you have for your husband, but remember that it’s just a symbol. The marriage is the important thing. And congratulations!
